Entry 6 How Yoga Has Changed My Life

I had a funny introduction to Yoga. I had a vague idea of what Yoga was from the curly haired woman still wearing leg warmers on PBS, but didn’t really understand the mind-body-spirit connection or its deep-seeded historical roots until an opportunity came from a friend.
Shana Banana is a Florida based kids entertainer who has practiced Yoga throughout her adult life. She was putting together a kids DVD that put Yoga poses to song to help ease children into yoga. She asked if my 2 daughters wanted to appear in the DVD. From attending rehearsal with them and learning the silly songs, I was introduced to how fun Yoga could be, how grounding it is, and more importantly I was introduced to local Yoga instructor, Haris Lender.
I attended a few of Haris’ classes, spoke with her about her experiences at Yogaville, went to some motivational Swami lectures in her living room, and did some of my own research to truly understand yoga. Over the past 6 years, I’ve come to appreciate yoga — not as a form of exercise — but as a separate entity that combines strength and relaxation, spirit and muscle, in a way nothing else can.
This year, I’ve used National Yoga Month (Sept 2009) to try new poses and accessories as a way to explore more avenues of Yoga. As my body becomes more flexible, my thoughts do as well, and I embrace life with newfound passion that extends far beyond my mat and into all aspects of my life.
